The author of the article explains how some methods including the ABC method of accounting can help Panasonic in increasing its profits. He starts the article by describing the history of the Japanese company, Panasonic, which helped to fuel the Japanese economy in the early decades of the twentieth century. He shows the company’s performance throughout the years and also categorizes the high growth businesses of the company. He then goes on to define ABC costing and the benefits that can be gained using them. In Panasonic’s case, multiple forms of ABC were advised, and the limitations of the ABC method were shown. He went on to describe the benefits and limitations of the just-in-time method that the company uses in the different categories of its product line. Similarly, he also goes into the quality and environmental costs of efficient production to comply with the increasing regulations. All four methods should be implemented in Panasonic operations only after scrutinizing the benefits and pitfalls.

The authors of the article show how the developing city of Sava in Madagascar, which is a developing country and where facilities for ophthalmology are poor and to optimize the resources and manage costs better ABC method was used to do determine cost based on the ophthalmologist’s time spent on the particular activity. So, the ABC was based on the unit cost based on the time and also take into account the number of resources needed to do a particular procedure. Fixed and variable costs from the Kilimanjaro Center for community ophthalmology (KCCO) were analyzed and showed that 97 percent of the overall cost was generated by patients themselves. All costs were divided according to the activity and that helped to determine the revenue based on the cost of an activity. The time-driven ABC method for the ophthalmology activities was compared in terms of different activities as a proportion of total revenue, cost recovery for each part, and determined that while the hospital visits generated profits, the outreach cams did not. So bigger but fewer camps were advised. Though full sustainably was not achieved for such operations, the ABC method of accounting improves self-sufficiency in many aspects of the operations.

She shows how multidimensional models can help in the analysis of multiple dimensions using schemas, and fact and dimensional tables. She also goes on to show examples of problems. In such models, cubes of information are created, including one for the master budget, which accounts for hierarchical attributes and other attributes. So, according to the article, multidimensional cubes solve the problem of master budgeting by handling all related data well to determine budgets irrespective of the software used.

The author has put forward a concept of defensive budgeting where he describes that resources can dwindle even if a project remains the same. Sometimes, higher authorities restrict funding for a project to pay for other projects and provides the appropriate actions to prevent such actions. The author tells us that it is important to identify the factors that affect the diminishing of funding from adversaries. According to him, there may be certain projects that managers are interested in, thus cutting funding. Sometimes, the benefits of cost reduction and their methods may be overestimated, and travel expenses can also be very expensive. There may be also a movement of resources for a project or no resource at all. He also points out hiring freeze, bringing in private companies for better efficiency and program delays and advises using defensive tactics to ward off such situations.

The third article gives us the concept and the importance of using dimensional models and cubes in understanding master budgeting by greater analysis of data concerning multiple dimensions like time, region, etc. The granular level of data can also be changed by changing the hierarchical data and slicing and dicing the data. The last article shows us that there, in practice, there may be budget constraints to projects due to various internal reasons in a company and how those pitfalls of lack of resources can be avoided to allocate an appropriate amount of budget to the project.
