COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course examines major policy-making areas in corporate finance and the impact of alternative policies on the value of the firm. Emphasis is placed on strengthening financial decision-making skills. Advanced topics include capital investment policy, financing and capital structure policies, dividend policy, and corporate control.

The student will demonstrate a mastery of financial statement analysis and forecasting techniques.
Learning Objectives: The student will:
A-1 Demonstrate income statement analysis and forecasting techniques and develop pro forma income statements.
A-2 Demonstrate balance sheet asset and liability valuation techniques and the ability to prepare pro forma balance sheets.
A-3 Develop the ability to assess earnings quality.
A-4 Explain the importance of free cash flow and the relationship to accounting earnings.
A-5 Demonstrate various forecasting methods and define limitations of these methods.
A-6 Develop pro forma financial statements and use to analyze corporate financial performance.

Case study analysis requires quantitative analysis, data interpretation, sound financial judgement and detailed analysis. The objective of the case study method is for students to begin developing their expertise in identifying the root cause or the important issues/problems within a case that must be dealt with and solved.

C. Course Assignments:
Discussion Boards – Current Events
In week 1 each student will be required to research and post a summary of a current event impacting U.S. and Global business markets. The initial summary will need to be posted by Wednesday evening at 11:59 pm. Each student will then be required to post a minimum of three responses to their classmates summaries. In order to ensure a good discussion of the topic, the follow-posts cannot all be made on the same day.

There are 3 case study assignments in this course.
Individual Case Study Analysis Papers
Each student will analyze, review, write and submit a detailed report on 3 cases within this course weeks 2, 4, 6). Written case analyses are due on Sunday evenings at 11:59 pm.
Case Study Analysis Paper Format
Students will write a detailed report on the 3 cases. The report must contain the following three parts:
(1) Title Page (APA Format)
(2) Executive summary: One page (APA Format)
(3) Case analysis: Each report should include 5-6 pages of analysis (APA Format) with references to an unlimited number of tables, figures, and notes attached as appendices. The written analysis must be concise. The title page, executive summary and appendices do not count towards the 5-6 pages of analysis. Your report should address the suggested questions for the case, but students are strongly encouraged to address additional points believed to be important for the analysis.

Discussion Boards – Case Studies
In weeks 3, 5, and 7 there will be a discussion regarding the previous weeks case study. Each student will make an initial post answer two questions regarding the previous weeks case study: (1) how does the case study relate to the core topic studied during the previous week and (2) what possible solutions did you suggest in your case study analysis. The initial post must be made by Wednesday evening at 11:59 pm. The student must then post at least five reply posts by Sunday evening at 11:59 pm. The reply posts must continue the discussion by comparing and contrasting solutions amongst the class, determining alternate solutions, and answering any instructor questions. In order to ensure a good discussion of the topic, the follow-posts cannot all be made on the same day.
Final Exam – You will be assigned a final exam in Week 7. The exam will be comprehensive and cover all of the topics discussed in the course.
