Climate Change

Introduction

Climate change remains one of the most threatening and prevalent issues of today’s time. NASA (“Overview: Weather,” n.d.) defines climate change as a long-term change in the average weather patterns that have come to define Earths local, regional, and global climates. This affects the ocean temperatures, rising sea levels, ice loss, and frequent and severe weather changes such as heatwaves, wildfires, hurricanes, or floods to name a few. This, in turn, affects the humans who are inhabiting` the earth, but all forms of life are in danger of extinction if climate change issues are not addressed. The impacts of climate change on society will be devastatingif the trend continues. Given that climate change is an issue caused mostly by human impact, humans have a chance to restore the earth based on the knowledge that they have, and creating global laws that are enforced in every country.

Background on Climate Change

How do we know that climate change exists? Climate has changed throughout the earth’s history on multiple occasions; the last Ice Age being one example. The earths current temperature trend is particularly alarming because most of it has been causedby human activity since the mid-20th century, which means that it is increasing by an unprecedented rate in the past few decades. Carbon dioxide and other gases are considered greenhouse gases that cause the Earth to warm in response to their excessive release. We can also determine that climate change is currently happening because of the melting of ice caps from Greenland, Antarctica, and tropical mountain glaciers, which show up on the satellites. (“Overview: Weather,” n.d.) Earths satellites have collected data over many years that have confirm that the climate is changing drastically through the images it captures. We know that climate change exists because the earth is going through significant temperature changes that are ironically affecting the same humans who are affecting it.

It has been mentioned before that human impact is what has caused climate change but what is it that is being done that causes this negative impact. Greenhouse gases are gases that naturally occur and are released, but human activity increases the concentration trapping heat in our atmosphere, causing global warming. Burning coal, oil, and gas, cutting down forests, increased livestock farming, nitrogen fertilizers, and fluorinated gases have all been proven to be a human contribution to climate change.(“Overview: Weather,” n.d.)This means that though gases naturally live and are released on Earth, the increase the in the rate of this release has caused global warming, thus causing, climate change.

The well-being of human beings is bound to be affected given that the climatic conditions have affected human ability to grow food and other services, which are critical to their wellbeing. (O’Grady, 2020) Air Pollution, allergens and pollen, diseases carried by vectors, food and waterborne diarrheal disease, floods, temperature extremes, and wildfires are all impacts of climate change on humans. These factors have been proven directly affect humans and their immediate well-being, which means that climate change does, in fact, affect humans. With the increase in temperatures and the increase in natural disasters, humans are more susceptible to the risk of illness which may include diarrhea, liver damage, kidney damage, effects the body’s nervous and respiratory systems, etc. Bacteria grows in warmer temperatures, allowing viruses to grow and multiply in the water supply. For those who live in countries with better water filtration, they still ingest many bacteria because they consume fish or seafood that may be loaded with toxins. In  order to reduce  our consumption  or reduce the increase in toxins,  there should  include some kind of climate reform  that is acknowledged by all countries.

Climate action cuts across all fields including finance, technology, and policy (Jackson, 2020). Because of this, countries are more resilient to acknowledge that climate change is real and happening which leads them to deny and lie to their citizens, which creates uneducated individuals. The ability to empower countries to adopt resilient measures to climate change would be instrumental in the sustainability of the environment (Burris, 2018). It would also provide an ideal framework to boost nations’ capacities to adapt and remain resilient to climate heating. The financial and technological resources that would be used to reduce the effects of global warming would be a hinder to many countries or put them in debt which is why many refuse to create policies or acknowledge climate change as a global issue. (Jackson, 2020)

Despite hearing or previously discussing climate change, it is evident that most human beings are not keen on the need to conserve the environment. Empowering state officers to educate the public on the importance of environmental conservation helps in ensuring that the public is aware of the adverse impacts of failure to conserve the environment. The creation of awareness would help in the elimination of intangibility thereby minimizing the broad concept of climate change and management (Oyero, Oyesomi, Abioye, Ajiboye& Kayode-Adedeji, 2018). Thus, the gap between the creation of awareness should be minimized to help in the management of climate change. The impacts of climate change are different. Identifying how they resonate in different communities plays instrumental roles in the creation of effective systems that would help minimize the implications of climate change in society. One solution is that we must put emphasis on the need to eliminate the dangers of climate change by reducing the gap between knowledge and action amongst society. Policy measures that focus on the ability to harness community power and abilities on environment conservation would be effective at persuading businesses, individuals, and communities to adjust their behavior and limit emissions. Thus, the focus would remain on the management of the environment by creating awareness.

Arguments in Support of Creating Awareness

Climate change is a long-term activity that will take place in a humans lifetime. The trends of climate change have not necessarily been consistent but its implications on the weather patterns and crop production remain consistent. Resultantly, several avenues should be exploited to ensure that the public is aware of the role that they ought to play in abid to help with the protection of the environment. The communication of climate change should resonate among the public through essential media and state officers. According to Oyero et al. (2018), the media plays an essential role in the dissemination of information to the public. Climate change is a subject that affects the public in several spheres. As hinted by O’Grady, E. (2020), the implications of climate change transcend beyond those that face humans only. The implications of climate change are evident among microbiological organisms, animals, and crops. When the world is unable to maintain its balance due to climate change, then the need to introduce viable measures that would enable its protection is inevitable. Thus, engaging multiple stakeholders would help in the creation of awareness of the implications of poor environmental management (Geiger, Swim& Fraser, 2017). State officers, the media, teachers, and non-governmental organizations can ensure that they create an ideal environment through supporting platforms that create awareness of climate change. Accordingly, states have an equal stake with regards to the stewardship for climate conservation. Resultantly, promoting awareness helps in the development of sustainable methods for the conservation of the environment.

Another notable initiative towards the management of climate change is the need to encourage societies to consider alternative energy sources. A look at the demand for energy throughout the world reveals that using nonrenewable energy sources is the main reason for the climate change challenges (Güney, 2019).  Besides the release of toxic greenhouse gases to the environment, non-renewable energy sources are also known for their high rate of depletion. The implication is that the environment is left to fend for itself in a bid to help it generate new sources. Knox(2016),believesthat humans are aware of the implications of the gases released into the environment yet choose to turn a blind eye regarding their impacts. Resultantly, the need to embrace alternative energy sources cannot be ignored. A look at the research by News Bites (2021), hints that one of the implications of climate change is malnutrition among children. Embracing alternative energy sources would be effective at reducing the discrepancy witnessed leading to cases of malnutrition. Resultantly, the need to create a sustainable environment is dependent on the awareness created to help boost individual responses towards the glaring pandemic of climate change. Making poor choices like the type of energy resources used is bound to diminish the world’s ability to realize sustainability and manage climate change. As much as the process of climate change is progressive, human beings have a major role to play to help in slowing the adverse impacts of the process. Embracing alternative energy sources is more of a response to the awareness calls, which seek to educate society on the aspects known to propel climate change.

Conclusion

Human beings should be empowered to make them conscious of the role that they ought to play with regards to environment conservation and hence mitigating the impacts of climate change. Accordingly, the review illuminates a case whereby human beings have turned a blind eye on their environment due to lack of awareness. The need to engage multi-stakeholders to ensure that the society is aware of the adverse impacts of their actions on the environment and hence the climate would be instrumental in averting the climate change risks currently faced. For most people, lack of knowledge may be to blame for their actions known to trigger climate change. Similarly, the laxity by several agencies in communicating and creating awareness is known to lead to the current stalemate that has exposed the human population to the harsh impacts of climate change. Accepting change and creating systems that seek to harness alternative energy sources and hence the management of the environment is known to boost sustainability. The need to restore the planet to its former state should not only be a desire but must also be accompanied by the relevant actions to ensure that laws and policies governing climate change are followed.
