Assignment: Answer ONE of the following questions in a 3-4-page paper. You must present an original argument with a clear thesis statement that is based in a well-reasoned, well-sourced interpretation of the text. You must cite the assigned readings to substantiate your interpretation at every stage of the argument.None of these questions have a single correct answer, but there are better and worse interpretations and better and worse arguments to substantiate those interpretations.
Formatting: The paper must be 3-4full pagesin length in 12-point, Times New Roman, double spaced font with 1 margins. The paper must use a standard and recognized citation style such as MLA or Chicago Style. Use the assigned publications of the texts.Write the number of the question that you select somewhere on the first page. Straying from this formatting may lose you points.
Due date: Papers will be due on Friday, February 19th at 11:59pm on the course website. Late papers will be penalized at the rate of one full letter grade per day (A to B). No extensions will be granted without talking to me in advance. Make sure you have access to the website and aim to submit your papers early.

1. The authors from the second part of the course offer very different accounts of the formation of the subject, or subjectification. Using the work of Louis Althusser and either Stuart Hall or Jacques Rancire, write an essay answering whether the formation of the subject is an activity of domination or of democracy. Explain your reasons why.
2. Using the assigned readings from two of the three following authors Louis Althusser, Stuart Hall, and/or Jacques Rancire answer the following question: Is ? How so?
3. Compare Stuart Halls notion of hegemony with Jacques Rancires account of the police. In this comparison answer the following question: is hegemonic politics only ever an attempt to create a new order of the police and therefore also a foreclosure of democracy?

A (100-90): demonstrates careful and thorough reading of the text(s); answers all aspects of the question(s); provides a clearly articulated thesis; outlines the way in which thesis will be explicated; defends and supports thesis in the body of the paper using textual evidence; argues, does not summarize; argument is a persuasive interpretation of the texts; structurally elegant; writing is clear and straightforward. B (89-80): demonstrates familiarity with the text, though may rely more on class discussion than on ones own reading or may demonstrate a cursory reading; provides a solid thesis but may not explain how it will be defended, support it thoroughly with textual references, or develop arguments fully; may of text to support claims; structurally, individual points may feel disconnected from one another. Writing is clear but with room for improvement. Good, but not excellent, work.
C (79-70): a weak, if appropriate or topical, thesis that either does not require a strong defense or relate entirely to the original question(s); demonstrates minimal passing acquaintance with the material; argument may be drawn primarily from lecture; substance of paper may tend toward summary of the text rather than critical engagement; individual paragraphs may be well-crafted, but the paper overall lacks a sense of cohesion and attention to detail. Fair, but not good, work.
D (69-60): does not provide a clear thesis; may not respond to the question(s); does not support claims with evidence; emphasizes opinion or summary over analysis; paper lacks structure; does not otherwise demonstrate mastery of the concepts presented and analyzed in class; lack of organization makes paper difficult to follow; neglect of grammar, style, and writing.
F (59-0): does not provide a thesis or respond to the question(s); does not come close to length requirements; may be purely opinion or summary of text(s); no attempt to convey an interpretation of the material; lacking structure, coherence; no attention paid to grammar, style, and writing.
Answer the question in a clear and direct thesis statement and explain your answer. Do not simply restate the prompt question, but rather answer it.
The thesis statement is the most important part of the paper. Make sure that you have one and that your paper substantiates it. This usually appears around the end of the first paragraph.
The body paragraphs should be composed of main points that fit within the broader claim of the paper, evidence from the texts, and interpretive analysis that connects the evidence to your argument.
Dont fill the paper with information that is irrelevant to your argument.
Nuanced papers are better papers. Stake out a position and defend it, but acknowledge and be honest about potential inconsistencies.

Read the paper out loud to yourself to be sure that your argument makes sense logically and grammatically.Have a friend who is not in this class read it and take it to the Undergraduate Writing Center.
