Organizations do not always provide information systems that allow their staff to perform their responsibilities efficiently and effectively. Read the article, “Lifting the Veil Off Shadow IT.” Then, respond to the following:
Take a position favoring or opposing shadow IT.
If you are in favor, give one reason that shadow IT should be allowed. If you are not in favor, provide one way that the organization can reduce the risks of shadow IT.
What is the best way an IT department can meet users technology needs without additional cost or risk to the organization? Justify your answer by responding to another students post that differs from your answer. Explain why your idea is preferable.
Do not repeat suggestions from the article or that have been posted by another student.
Part 2
Data governance involves the supervision, monitoring, and control of an organizations data assets. Its main concerns are data quality, appropriateness, and cost-effectiveness of the controls. It is difficult because organizations typically have a lot of old data, which is of unknown quality.
Imagine that you must collect and assess the quality and appropriateness of data held by a large, multi-national organization. What steps you would take? Include how you would address network, security, and ethical considerations when deciding what data to collect from the company.
This is not a job you can do on your own! Explain the kinds of support youll need and how you will obtain resources and cooperation.
Part 3
Identify one cyberattack that occurred in the last 2 years. What caused the cyberattack? Do not repeat an example that has been posted previously.
How did the cyberattack impact data loss, financial loss, cleanup cost, and the loss of reputation?
If you were the manager of this company, what are some key steps you would have taken to prevent cyberattacks and enhance cyber security?
Recommend information that should be in the cloud and describe which information should not be in the cloud. Be sure to include in your recommendation your thoughts on preventing cyberattacks, addressing security concerns, or .
Part 4
You may have noticed that when you look at products on a search engine, that same product appears as an advertisement in your social media and other sites you visit. Many search engines provide advertisers with tools for evaluating the impact of different keywords or phrases. These tools typically track user behavior patterns and associate products for sale by companies that subscribe to and pay for their services to help identify potential customers. On the other hand, there are also ad-blockers that block this type of communication.
What constraints, if any, should be applied to this practice? Do not repeat ideas that have been posted by other students.
If you are the CIO or an executive manager at a small company that depends on this type of advertising to generate revenue, how might this affect your feelings toward the technology?
Part 5
Customers use mobile devices for a wide range of shopping and commercial activities. Mobile devices are becoming an attractive way to pay for products or conduct banking. Select an organization with which you regularly do business but not one you have used in a previous discussion. Do not repeat an example that has been posted by another student.
Describe the benefits this organization provides through its mobile computing options.
What risks most concern you in using this app? How would you mitigate these risks?
Part 6
The executive management team of a to be more customer focused in the marketplace. Because you oversee the CRM, you have been assigned to support the newly-created social media marketing plan:
What are the best steps to identify customers and the different ways they use to contact your company? Defend your answer.
Explain to the executive management team how the steps you recommended will be incorporated in the organizations ERP.
Part 7
Youve just left an all-hands meeting at your company*. The CEO was very upset at the rise of shadow IT projects a major indicator that the companys internal information system has failed to meet its needs. Because the current information system is inadequate, inefficient, and outdated, the CEO is inviting everyone in the organization to propose a new operational, decision support, or enterprise information system to replace it. The executives have allocated $5 million to fund the most promising idea. This is your chance to make a difference in the company (not to mention your own career). Write your proposal as a memo that the entire C-suite will review. Include at least these points, in your own words, to be persuasive: 1. Identify the main functions of your proposed information system and why they are important to the business. 2. Describe what types of data your information system will hold and how data quality will be ensured. 3. Explain how the old information system handles the functions you mentioned, the problems that occur, and why your information system will handle things better. 4. Offer evidence of feasibility: Show that similar information systems have been built successfully and that they save more money than they cost. The executives are busy, so keep your memo to 1-4 pages and avoid any extraneous content. *You may use a current or former employer, but do not disclose anything confidential. Or, you can pick another organization if you are familiar with their internal (not customer-facing) information systems. You can disguise the organization and populate it with famous names. Made-up companies are problematic because of the amount of detail and realism they require.

Congratulations! The executives are taking your information system proposal seriously. In fact, they think it has the potential to transform the way the organization works. The CIO asked you to read Connelly (2016) to think about what resources youll need to get your new information system up and running. Please also review the five in (Basu 2015, p. 32-35) so you can recommend a change management pattern for your company to follow. Write a memo to the CIO that describes how to implement your information system into the organization. Please focus on these topics: 1. How much of the implementation work can you handle? What additional resources (people, information, time, money, etc.) will expedite the process so you dont end up like Susie Jeffer? 2. Outline a change management strategy: What new equipment and software are necessary? What training and support will the staff need? How will the staff complete their work during the transition period? Do you anticipate other areas of resistance? 3. The CIO is very skeptical, so provide evidence that your assessment is accurate and complete. It can be difficult to admit to personal limitations! Your memo should be 35 pages long. Your proposed information system is still a contender. The executives, however, are asking whether it is too limited to prevent the shadow IT projects that continue to take place throughout the organization. They believe that you have considered what the organization does now, but how will your system adapt to new products and processes? Read IQMS (2015) for a concrete example of what they mean. Youll have to quell their fears, so its time for another memo. Please focus on these points: 1. Identify any significant changes that your organization might reasonably make in its product offerings in the next 3 years. Explain the competitive benefits of this change. 2. Explain how your information system addresses or can adapt to the introduction of these new product offerings. 3. Give one reason why capabilities for the new product offerings should or should not be incorporated in the initial information system design. Justify your reason. This memo should be 35 pages long. Part 10
In Week 10, you will provide a detailed project presentation for your new information system project. Because of its importance to the organization, your presentation must be thoughtful and visually appealing. To help you stay on track for this three-week effort, the executives have assigned you a project manager. For each week leading up to the presentation, you are expected to turn in a short (less than one page) status report. It must address just 4 things: 1. What did you expect to accomplish on the project this week? 2. What did you actually accomplish on the project this week? 3. What issues have arisen, and what help do you need? 4. What do you expect to accomplish on the project next week? Please write up your responses as a series of bullet points in memo form. There is no need for a cover page.
Part 11
Your big presentation is due next week! Update your project manager with what has happened since your last report. Include these 4 things: 1. What did you expect to accomplish on the project this week? (Copy this from item 4 of last weeks report.) 2. What did you actually accomplish on the project this week? 3. What issues have arisen, and what help do you need? 4. What must you accomplish to be ready for the kickoff presentation next week? Please write up your responses as a series of bullet points in memo form. There is no need for a cover page.
Part 12
Congratulations. Your project has been staffed and you are about to meet with the team for the first time. Initial impressions are important and youll need visuals for your presentation. Create a slide show (in PowerPoint or similar software) in which you address the following, in this order: 1. Goals: What the project hopes to accomplish. 2. Critical Success Factors: Identify at least 4 different stakeholders; for each, list at least 2 things that the stakeholder requires in order to deem the project successful. 3. Acquisition strategy: Should the system be built in-house, created by a contractor, purchased offthe-shelf and customized, or leased as a service? Explain your rationale. 4. Resources: For in-house development, what people/skills are required and what development lifecycle do you recommend? Otherwise, identify 3 candidate organizations that can deliver the system. 5. System functions: In a table format, summarize the types of users for the system; the business reason(s) each would use the system; the ways that the system supports each of these needs; and how this support differs from the current system. 6. Connectivity: Provide a diagram that shows how the system will connect to the other information systems and what data flows among them. 7. Security: List the most serious cybersecurity threats and vulnerabilities of the new system. Suggest strategies to address them. 8. Mobility: Identify the systems capabilities for mobile use. Include a title and summary slide. Use one slide for each of the 8 points above. Include speaker notes or audio narration that explains each slide more fully
