Mixed-Method Approach for Cybercrime and Company Hacking
Introduction
Cybercrimes are crimes involving a computer and a network. Computers may be used to carry out the crime or as targets (Sabillon et al.,2016). Company hacking is where a company’s information systems are breached and information security threatened. Cybercrimes and company hackings have been rampant lately due to the move towards information technology systems(Sabillon et al.,2016). Many companies have incorporated implementable computer skills within their organizations to mitigate company hacking and cybercrimes. However, the efficacy of such skills is yet to be determined. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of using implementable computer skills in mitigating cybercrimes and company hacking using a mixed research approach. .Johnson et al. (2007) define a mixed-method approach as a type of research where the research team combines quantitative and qualitative research approaches for the overall purpose of depth and breadth of corroboration and understanding. This research design’s general goal is to strengthen and expand the study’s conclusion (Schoonenboom& Johnson, 2017). Consequently, a mixed research design should be valid and increase knowledge on the research subject. The application of a mixed research method is designed to maintain sufficient quality to meet the suitable combination of quantitative, qualitative, and mixed-method validities for the research study (Johnson and Christensen,2019).
This study will combine qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Qualitative and quantitative methods will be integrated into the research design by validating the findings using quantitative and qualitative sources. That is a convergent method whereby the researcher uses qualitative and quantitative approaches to collect research data (Wisdom& Creswell,2013). For this research, quantitative and qualitative data will be collected at roughly a similar time. The data will then be assessed using parallel dimensions suitable for each of the research methods. Afterward, collected data will be analyzed using quantitative and qualitative methods, and the results were obtained side-by-side for comparison during discussion. The two types of data will play the role of validating each other’s findings and help in coming up with a solid conclusion about the effectiveness of using implementable computer skills in mitigating cybercrimes and company hacking.
Formulation of Mixed method Approach
The process of conducting a mixed research method begins with planning the evaluation. At this point, the researcher decides on the approaches to use and how to combine them. Next, selection of a mix of methods to use is selected. That involves the data collection method for quantitative and qualitative data, data collection instruments, sample questions, and data source. The following process is data collection followed by the analysis of data collected. Finally, the findings are compared. A mixed-method approach is preferred for this research because it will strengthen the research and make the results more viable. Similarly, this method can reveal unexpected results and capture a broader perspective than a single research method. The study aims to investigate the effectiveness of using implementable computer skills in mitigating cybercrimes and company hacking. The research will therefore apply two strategies toanswer the research question. That will enable the researcher to understand the issue and create more confidence in the findings. By approaching the problem using the two techniques, the researcher can compare and contrast the two processes’ results. The conclusions being similar or reinforcing each other will give more confidence in the results of this research.
For this research, a parallel combination was applied. Qualitative and quantitative methods were separately used, and then the findings were integrated after analysis of both sets of data. The same team is involved in implementing the quantitative and qualitative research methods to create coherence. Data collection and analysis are to be carried out simultaneously to prevent changes that may be caused due to time difference and change in people’s perception of the research subject. The primary point in parallel combination is to conduct each method entirely separately from the other.
Qualitative Research Method
A qualitative research method featuring non-probability sampling methods will be used together with the quantitative research method to find the study results. A qualitative research method involves collecting and analyzing non -numerical data (Pera& Moi,2004). The advantage of qualitative research methods is that it incorporates the human experience into the research. Likewise, the qualitative research method is open-ended,giving the researcher a broad perspective on the research subject (Pera& Moi, 2004). For this study,surveys will be used to collect data from respondents who work in companies that have incorporated implementable computer skills in mitigating company hacking and cybercrimes. The survey will be conducted inquestionnaires with open-ended questions for the respondents to fill. The survey will be conducted online since it is easier, faster, and saves on extra costs and time (Braun et al.,2020). Online surveys likewise can be carried out concurrently with the quantitative data collection methods, thereby going in line with the mixed-method research model chosen. Each of the respondents will be selected randomly using non-probability sampling methods. After sampling, the respondents will be asked to take the survey. Taking part in the survey depends on the respondent’s willingness, and all information regarding the respondent will be kept private.
Qualitative data collection methods will supplement the quantitative techniques by incorporating the human experience into the research. Likewise, it will provide a broader perspective on the study since its information is of varied nature. Consequently, the qualitative survey will again enable comparison making the research findings and conclusion more accurate.
Triangulation
Triangulation will be used in the study to compare the findings from the quantitative and qualitative research methods. Triangulation is the act of combining the different research methods to study one thing. After separate data analysis from both the qualitative and quantitative research methods, triangulation will be used to compare the results and identify similarities and differences, hence coming up with a converging conclusion.
