People with different characteristics discussion

Abnormal Characteristics
People with different characteristics from what people are used to seeing, which I dont agree with
what is happening with our world, which is slowly changing over time and not like who it was before. I
chose TED talk, “The Revolutionary Power of Diverse Thought” by Elif Shafak, shows us that we should
never be silenced. Although we should always confront, and stand up for others that are going through
things harder then we are. Also she says that some of the greatest things happened because of people
with different characteristics and color then what some people are used to seeing. I also chose, A highly
scientific taxonomy of haters. By Negin Farsad, because she talks about how haters could be treated
with humor, or what she called . Also she points out how Muslims are always
categorized as Terrorist. In the following paragraphs I will be explaining ways people could possibly
change their mindset about what they about people, and how they tend to be treated by others.
Elif Shafak has many examples to show what happens to people around the world, and how they are
being treated and judged. The first example I got from the Ted talk, to show what is happening to them,
I understand why youre a feminist, because, you know, you live in Turkey. And then Shafak said to
her, I dont understand why youre not a feminist, because, you know, you live in America. (5: 45) This
quote shows how judging other could make it go both ways. The way Shafak responds to the stranger
could have been worse but she responded with the way she was talked to. Shafak also explains her
argument with the quote above by giving her emotional self a real gap. Second example is about how
people are in a club called WADWIC which stands for worried and depressed writers international
club, Shafak says, I am an Istanbulite, but I’m also attached to the Balkans, the Aegean, the
Mediterranean, the Middle East, the Levant. I am a European by birth, by choice, the values that I
uphold. I have become a Londoner over the years. I would like to think of myself as a global soul, as a
world citizen, a nomad and an itinerant storyteller. I have multiple attachments, just like all of us do.
And multiple attachments mean multiple stories. (17:29) This quote is important because it shows how
she thinks how she can fit in anywhere because she is a world citizen and how she has multiple
personalities and how that means she has multiple stories. Also how Shafak explains how people have
emotions to show people what they can do with it, because emotions have no limit, I do know the
power of emotions — I have discovered over time that emotions are not limitless. You know? They have
a limit. There comes a moment — it’s like a tipping point or a threshold — when you get tired of feeling
afraid, when you get tired of feeling anxious. (19:20) This is important because she is just trying to
explain to people how if you believe enough in emotion what you could do is limitless and no one can
stop you. Also she explains how everyone could feel comfortable around people, they do not know and
have zero information about them. Shafak makes sure her tone is well of to be informative so people do
not stop listening and keep everyone focused during her talk.
The second Ted talk, Farsad explains how the idea of people and haters, are always aiming for people
who are weaker then them, like what they do with Muslims, and how they are specified as terrorists
because people can not take the time to get to know the real person that is getting hurt. Farsads
favorite thing to say is, Comedy is one of our best weapons,(7:27) Farsad says this because if people
knew how to take the pain away by saying a few jokes that would brighten their day instead of feeling
sad and depressed, she says how we need to say some poop jokes to make her audience laugh a little.
They’re like ideological sluts who move from hating to not hating. And they do it because they don’t
have enough information. This is the group I like to target with social justice comedy. (2:06) This is
important because it shows the point I showed above about how they go into the weaker people and pick
on them to make them feel worse about themselves. Also how they should not be doing this with people,
because of the suicidal rate that happens because of depression. Farsad took a shot on the
thedailydenouncer.com, “It’s a website that denounces terrorism every day of the week, while taking the
weekends off”(5:41) This website shows some Americans with unnecessary to stop terrorism and not
everyone supports, people that are innocent and have violent thoughts and sick ones against innocent
people. This Ted shows us that we should never give up on people, always try to reach out and help
everyone out, that looks like they are in danger.
In conclusion, people with different characteristics from what people are used to seeing,
which I dont agree with what is happening with our world, which is slowly changing over time and not
like who it was before. This is what I explained with the two Ted talks I used make my argument as clear
as possible.
