Read the case study below (Consumer Goods Ltd.) and write a short essay (500-600
words) to THREE of the following FOUR questions:
1. Critically assess the view that the development and implementation of a
balanced scorecard (BSC) approach would be an easy way for Consumer
Good Ltd to address the challenges associated with managing their supply
chain performance in line with the companys corporate strategy. Your
answer should include examples of the performance measures that may be
most appropriate for CGL to include in a BSC.
2. Critically appraise how the application of ISO accreditation standards and
guidelines could improve the supply chain performance of Consumer Goods
Ltd in line with the companys corporate strategy. You should provide
examples from ISO standards with which you are most familiar.
3. Critically evaluate how benchmarking might help Consumer Goods Ltd to
drive improvement of business processes that impact their supply chain.
Consider the business processes that CGL should target for improvement, the
type of benchmarking that would be most appropriate for the benchmarking of
these processes, and the likely issues that CGL may face should they choose
to implement any lessons learned.
4. Critically assess the merits of (BPR) as an
approach to address the supply chain performance issues of Consumer
Goods Ltd. Suggest how BPR might be implemented so as to bring about
breakthrough improvement and discuss the challenges that may need to be
addressed during BPR implementation.
Case Study: Consumer Goods Limited.
Consumer Goods Ltd. (CGL) is one of
the worlds largest consumer goods
firms, with well- known brands of
detergent, toothpaste, and disposable
nappies (diapers). CGL is organised
around five business sectors: laundry
and cleaning, paper goods, beauty
care, food and beverages, and health
care. To the management of CGL, this
makes a lot of sense. Dividing such a
large organization along product lines allows each business sector to develop
product, pricing, and promotion policies, as well as supply chain strategies, which
are independent of one another.
However, to the distributors and retailers who are CGLs direct customers, the view
is quite different. Each of these customers has to deal with five separate billing and
logistics processesone for each business sector (Figure 1).

The business structure means that the customer is not only forced to use five
different billing processes, five different sets of terms and conditions but they also
have no opportunity to get volume price discounts based on their overall volume of
business with CGL. Each business sector uses its own logistics processes, which
results in small, uncoordinated shipments and what the customers believe are
inflated transportation costs compared to the competitors of CGL.
This structure creates a wide range of problems:
CGL does not allow customers to purchase all CGL brands together for
delivery on the same truck.
Some customers might go several days without receiving an order, only to
have several trucks with CGL orders arrive at the receiving dock at the same
time on the same morning.
Different product categories are shipped on different trucks with different
invoices.
The trade promotions process is so complex that more than 27,000 orders a
month require manual corrections.
The separate pricing and promotion policies, coupled with non-coordinated
management of logistics activities across the five business sectors, resulting
in as many as nine prices per item and order quantities of less-than-full
truckload.
Additionally, CGL has a corporate strategy which
is committed to and
value, not just in the short term but for
generations to come. CGL recognise that to
achieve these objectives they need to work with
supply chain partners who share CGLs
standards in respect of corporate citizenship
which include diversity, the environment and
sustainability. CGL, however, recognise that it
has difficulties in communicating and monitoring
corporate citizenship performance in respect of
the suppliers with whom they work. CGL has
also recently noted an increase in investor
enquiries relating to the companys corporate
citizenship performance.
As a general guide, the following criteria will be used as a basis for marking the various sections of
each question answered. Coursework 2 carries an overall weighting of 50% of the module assessment:
