Description
On my stage 5 practicum placement at Sir Charles Gardner hospital, where I was assigned to look after a 64-year-old indigenous lady admitted to the ICU, following a coronary artery bypass graft. As I was looking after my patient during my shift, her grandson offered me a list of family members that he claimed were only allowed to visit the patient, which resulted in the grandson becoming frustrated and then later become a conflict.
Feelings
At first, I was very confident once the grandson offered me the list, but then I was confused as I was trying to understand why the grandson would make a list that has excluded the patient’s sisters. The list contained more than 20 names for the patient’s children as well as their partners and kids. As I was trying to go through the list, I felt very much overwhelmed. Finally, I was so flustered that I could not think of the best thing that I could do at that moment.
Evaluation
On reflecting on my response to the patient’s grandson, I feel like there was much more that I could improve on. The experience I gain from this conversation will empower me with the required knowledge to handle such situations that require critical thinking. I was very calm while conversing with the patient’s grandson since I carefully listened to him. I further assured him that I would deliver the message, which serves as my positive experience, as Buzzi suggested (Buzzi, 2016). I didn’t follow the correct method to ensure conflict resolution since I could have made him comfortable and even asked for the required help earlier in the conversation. Therefore, serving as my negative experience. Buzzi suggests that when patients are taken to healthcare places, the relatives have great confidence that there will be better treatment. Therefore, I should have been more engaging to ensure that I did not betray the grandson’s trust and ensure that the best treatment was acquired (Buzzi, 2016).
Analysis
It was very positive for me to remain calm as I was trying to converse with the patient’s grandson despite him getting upset when I was trying to look at the list, he provided for me. Therefore, I am assured that I can demonstrate my confidence when subjected to the same conditions in the future, for I consider myself an experienced person through the various situations. I tried my best to ensure that I could meet the expectations of the grandson. As the Nursing Board of Australia suggests in its findings that the training aims to ensure that a nurse could employ various skills to ensure that he achieves the best results, I employed my confidence and calmness to ensure a good conversation with the patient’s grandson (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016).
I was very much aware that my patient’s needs come first, thus ensuring that I got the required help to ensure that my patient was safe. I was able to deal with the grandson through the nurse’s help. My courage was the critical factor in ensuring that I emerge from the conversation as a successful health practitioner (Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, 2016). I was able to think critically to remember what to do when caught up in such situations. In this instance I failed to consider who the next of kin for my patient would be. When I handed over to my nurse it was discussed with the team and a family meeting was held at a later date with my patients’ husband who was her next of kin. Wendler (2016), states the next of kin is someone who is personally close to the patient who has a personal interest in their welfare they are a substitute decision marker on behalf of the patient until they are well enough to make their own decisions again. If it is not suitable for the patient to have visitors, the next of kin can make the decision working with the medical team to stop people from visiting. (Tønnessen et al, 2016)
conclusion
I have learned that I always need to be confident and calm when encountered with situations that require conflict resolution mostly on family-related matters. I have developed good communication skills like patience and listening to your opponent as he speaks, and trying not to interrupt him through my conversation with the patient’s grandson. I will significantly employ these skills in the future when I encounter similar situations to ensure that I maintain a good reputation in my career as an experienced nurse. My strategy of applying confidence in the situation was very successful, for I ensured that I did not put my patient’s life in danger as I try to solve the conflict. I realised that I significantly need to improve on my interpersonal skills. Next time, I would be very keen to ensure that I don’t face any difficulties with the patient’s grandson.
Action plan
In the future, I will critically think when caught up in a similar situation that involves conflicts with family members. I will use the LASSIE method to carefully listen to the person, acknowledge them, and separate them from others in space with them (Mohammmed et al., 2018). To increase the likelihood of achieving positive results from a similar situation, I would ensure that I would create an environment comfortable for them to clearly illustrate what can be done to ensure that everyone is well satisfied. I would also encourage them to focus on the possible ways to ensure a positive outcome for both of us. I need to learn the best communication skills that can ensure that I always respect other people’s opinions even if they are wrong to avoid various resulting conflicts. I will acquire this skill by enrolling in a program that targets to teach the same. I would also try to talk to my supervisor to give me the possible ways to ensure that I can cope with similar situations in the future (Mohammmed et al., 2018). If I am ever put in the same position involving family members, I must remember to establish who the next of kin is, since they know the patient’s best interest. As a nurse it is my priority to provide the best medical care for the patient and respect their wishes in doing so.
