Psyc Busters Research Paper      (60 points)

Due Date:  On or before April 19^th, 2021 at 11:59 pm

Students may choose to (1) write a paper OR (2) do an oral power point presentation on a scientific evaluation  of a commonly held belief about human social behavior (see suggestions below).  A partnership of 2 students will choose a question about social behavior and review current scientific research that investigates this question.  The guidelines below are for an written evaluation of the research you read.  Once you have read and summarized 4 research reports, explain your conclusion about whether the belief is scientifically supported or a false belief.

• You and your co-author should find and read 4 original social psychology research papers in peer-reviewed, scientific journals. You are encouraged to let me (the professor) know your co-author and topic before March 26^th, 2021  to ensure your research topic meets the assignment guidelines.
• Your paper must include an introduction and description of the question or belief being investigated. This summary needs to include definitions of key terms and variables.
• Your written review of each scientific research paper must include the hypothesis tested, a brief summary of the research method, and the study results – what did this research study discover?
• Your paper must have a conclusion. Based on your review of 4 research papers, what is the best conclusion for this belief about human social behavior?  A confirmed belief is when most research shows the belief is generally true, given the right conditions.  A belief is disconfirmed when it is not supported by research results.  In some cases, there may be no clear conclusion.
• Finally, you must have a title for your paper and include a list of references used.

Additional Important Information:

• You must work with a co-author on this assignment.  Both authors will receive the same score.  Failure to work with a co-author will result in a 10% deduction in this paper grade.
• If you do not have a co-author by March 29^th I will assign a co-author to work with you.
• Grading is based on how well you define central concepts, the quality of the research you review, and the clarity and logic of your analysis. Only psychology research in peer-reviewed journals is accepted.
• Papers must be 4-7 pages in length, double-spaced with at least 11.0 font, and include headings for each paper section. Use APA style.
• References must be included (at the end of the paper or beginning on page 8).
• Spelling, grammar, and syntax will be graded. Editorial assistance is encouraged.
• Papers must be in MS WORD format and uploaded to Canvas no later than 11:59 pm on April 18^th, 2021.
• Late papers are not Early papers are encouraged.

Sample Beliefs about Social Behavior / Research Problems

• When ordered to harm another person, most of us refuse to do so.
• Is it easy to change someone’s superstitious beliefs (UFOs, vaccines cause mental retardation, evolution, etc.) by presenting factual, scientific information? Why do some people reject science research that contradicts their personal beliefs?

• Is it better (as in physically and psychologically healthy) to express one’s anger than to hold it in? Is it better in the immediate moment and/or in the long run?  Are there healthy and unhealthy ways to express anger?
• People are like sheep – they mostly copy or follow what others do.
• People are mostly good – they will usually help another person in need.
• Some people say, ‘it’s a dog-eat-dog’ world.  This means that everyone is out to benefit themselves and are usually willing to take advantage of others to do so.
• A computer programmer was fired from Google (June 2017) after declaring that men are more socially dominant and therefore better programmers than women, who are more neurotic.  Are there real differences between men and women in social dominance, mental health, or other social behavior?  Does “social dominance” correlate with any job skill?
• Recent employer surveys show that many employers think 20-something job applicants lack social skills.  Is digital technology (twitter, internet, cell phones, etc.) having detrimental effects on thought processes and/or social behavior. What are these effects?
• Eyewitnesses to crimes accurately identify perpetrators.
• A comment in a news blog claimed, “Everyone knows diversity training just reinforces prejudice and bias. It doesn’t change anything.” Is there any truth to this statement?  Do people give up prejudice attitudes and discriminatory behavior simply by having more contact with diverse groups.
