Racism and Diversity
The four lenses module is a module used to analyze a concept, event, or idea. The module has four majors: history, natural and applied sciences, humanities, and social sciences. When using the model, it involves discussing an issue from either humanities or the other disciplines. For example, when analyzing a concept like gender inequality and diversity, we relate how gender equality froma historicalperspective relates to diversity. Also, we can relate the issue of gender inequality from the perspective of humanities, how it relates to diversity. Now the four lenses model needs the analysis to be made on the four perspectives. This paper discusses how racism relates to diversity from the perspective or the lenses of history and humanities.
Racism has a long broad scope and is sometimes confused withphysical harassment or abuse, but it takes many forms. Racism is the discrimination, prejudice, or hatred aimed at a person because of their nation of origin, ethnicity or the color of their skin. Racism takes much practice, is much wider, and has become a point of concern for the much it has been fought without victory. Acts of racism may include racial jokes and being called some kinds of names that suggest racist behaviors. Racism can also reveal itself in peoples’ attitudes and actions and may be seen in institutions and government systems (Estime & Williams, 2021). Racism results in the exclusion of some people from some activities because of their origins and color. Racism has continued to be a barrier in preventing people from equality and enjoying their dignity because of their racial affiliation.
Racism and Diversity on the Lens of History
Racism has been in existence since the transatlantic slave trade, where the Africans, mostly from West Africa, were sold and transported to Europe and then to America where they could take up jobs in European plantations in America. In this context, racism affected diversity negatively in that it could not allow the equal existence of people. The whites were seen as superior to the Africans and could not take up manual jobs but forced themto work for free (Ho, 2021). Diversity is seen as threatened because the Africans and the whites could not mingle; the Africans were discriminated from the social benefits then that the whites benefited; the only ‘interaction’ could be with their slave master when receiving work instructions.
Racism has affected the diversity of whites and African Americans through many of the social spheres. Racism had interfered with diversity in such that African Americans were denied voting rights in the 19th century, and there were segregations in the social life back then (Evans et al., 2020). The whites and the African Americans could not attend the same schools and churches. Racism affected African Americans’ quality of life, and they were deprived of basic privileges and their dignity greatly undermined. Racism was not subjected to African Americans alone. Still, even the Native Americans and the Hispanics were subjected to similar Whites’ treatments, were alienated from their land, and could not attend similar institutions with the Whites. The history lens is significant in the study of racism and its relation to diversity. It tries to explain the growth and development of racism and the challenges towards achieving diversity from ancient times to today.
Racism and Diversity on Lenses of Humanities
Humanities is the discipline concerned with the study of human behavior, words, and actions. Racism on the lens of humanities would explore how cultures have been used to perpetuate racism. The different cultures should be the sources of strength because positive ethnicity should be our strength in diversity. The world has been structured so that the adopted policies are discriminatory and affect the quality of life of people. The American system and how people interact with othersimpact a lot on the growth of racism. A black child has a different perception of the white child. The black child would grow to see the white child as superior because of the kind of society that they are raised (Jones, 2018). The African Americas receive different treatment at the hands of law enforcement agents. A black suspect is more criminalized than a white suspect. There have been incidences that the blacks have faced wrath at the hands of white policemen. The “Black Lives Matter movement” was adopted because of such mistreatment involving African Americans at the law enforcement agents’ hands. The people of color have been marginalized, and in some social groupings, there is much intolerance for the inclusion of the people of color. For instance, in the film industry, I have observed that African Americans or people of color get the roles related to criminals or a character related to stubbornness. Such incidence createsa long continuity of anti-social behavior and affects the diversity of the people. The people of color are perceived as inferior, and the levels of their dignity are lowered.
Relating racism and diversity on the lens of humanity helps us understand how the social construct and people’s quality of life of different origins and colors widen the gap between people. The study could help to resolves the perceptions of people on one another.
