Concert Report #2
I went back to Las Lomas High School one last time this year on December 6th for the
Symphonic Band and Wind Ensemble concert. Both ensembles are directed by Kara Ravina. The Symphonic Band features students from sophomore to senior year, and Wind Ensemble features students of the same age, except that it is an auditioned group that plays more advanced repertoire. Although the songs they played are considered “classical” in the band world, they played music from 20th century composers such as Frank Ticheli and Eric Whitacre.
The evening began with the Symphonic Band playing Proclamations by Rob Romeyn.
The opening of the piece was fanfare and it then transitioned into a lyrical section within two minutes of the song. The clarinets carried out the melody most of the time, and they played it very nicely. It went back and forth between the fanfaric and lyrical sections, almost like Rondo form. The only difference was that it sounded like A-B-A-B-A, and each time it was repeated it was like a Theme and Variation with a different instrument group focusing on melody. This was a great piece for the ensemble to start off with because it wasn’t too complicated for them to play nor for the audience to hear. It was fun and exciting, yet simple and pleasant. Next, they played Joy Revisited by Frank Ticheli. The first thing that caught my attention was how the melody sounded as if it was being passed to each instrumental section like a baton. The tempo was lively and allegro, and the articulation was very defined, perhaps staccatos or accents. Sometimes the balance was off during the “passing” of the melody in the opening section, or during any section. The ensemble played the slow rubato section very well, and I thought the saxophones controlled their sound very well as they tend to get loud. The final song the Symphonic Band played was Night Dances by Bruce Yurko. Unlike the two previous songs, this song started off minor, and the percussion parts were put in the spotlight. It opened with a melody with the chimes. Then, it transitioned into a call and response among the chimes and vibraphone. The timbre of the instrument made the ambiance very mysterious, and that only amplified when all the instruments began to enter one by one. The song then modulates into a fanfaric section with a clarinet solo. The soloist performed very well, despite the couple of squeaks. Her tone was very clear and I could tell she was passionate in her playing. Overall, Ravina chose a set that would help the Symphonic Band further learn and grow as musicians, which is just what a band director should be doing.
Up next was the Wind Ensemble which also performed three songs. They started off playing Incantation and Dance by John Chance. Certainly, the opening sounded like an incantation; it felt gloomy with the harmonic minor scale. The song picked up speed after the percussion facilitated the tempo change. They played a Latin style rhythm with different instruments, such as the woodblock, güiro, maracas, etc. What I found interesting was that the melody was not only given to the usual upper woodwinds and trumpets, but also to the bass clarinet, bassoons, and trombones. The bassoons could have been more confident but they played well regardless. Next, they played Noise Wheels of Joy by Eric Whitacre. This song reminded me of the movie Polar Express as certain elements, such as having a separate piano part, and giving the major melodies to the upper woodwinds and trumpets. Speaking of trumpets, the brass
section did a great job at maintaining their sound despite having to change their mutes by the measure during the song. Visually it was also very professional, as they all did so in sync. The final song was Snow Caps by Richard Saucedo. The song opened with a beautiful flute and oboe solo. Then as soon as the band came in, it became very articulate and staccato. What I loved the most about this song was the swing feel around two minutes in. It also got the audience clapping along and enjoying the music. Although all three songs were of different style and produced different colors in terms of sound, all of them were complex and full of adrenaline. To me it seems like Ravina really pushed her students’ energy to the limit. And turns out she was successful because the players may have been tired, but I did not hear it in their sound. Overall, the concert was great and I was extremely satisfied as a listener.
