The Constant Grind For Equality

Racism as a macro concept has been around forever and will continue forever. The degree or intensity of racism will vary from year to year, but the hope is that it’s vanished from society. This is an unrealistic wish, but it’s a good goal. Two of Martin Luther king, jrs. Well known works which are “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” and “I have a Dream” Speech both cover racism and the fact that discrimination and equity are misunderstood. So discrimination and equity are misinterpreted because of the frequent use of stereotypes, lack of education, and repudiation.

To being, discrimination and equity are misinterpreted because of the frequent use of stereotypes. A stereotype is simple a formed opinion from previous knowledge, that has a high chance of being incorrect. A commonly known stereotype in today’s society is “men are stronger and capable of doing more compared to women”. This is morally wrong; all men and women should be treated equally. Stereotypes are shown throughout King’s “Letter from a Birmingham Jail”. King recognizes and conveys the racist actions that whites often commit throughout the letter. One example is shown when King states “I have watched white churches stand on the sidelines and merely mouth pious irrelevancies and sanctimonious trivialities” (King p5). This section from King is stating that he’s witnessed white people, who claim to be Christians, stand by and talk about religious junk that has nothing to do with desegregation and eliminating racism. It seemed to him that these people seemed to be very little talk and absolution no action. On other hand, some stereotypes tend to be true. One that King states in his letter is “This “wait” has almost always meant “never” (King p2). King is saying that African Americans life of equality is coming soon and that they just have to “wait”, but in reality, it’s just an excuse from the majority to keep the minority from complaining. This notion tends to be true for blacks and the minority group. It’s just one of the excuses that whites use to separate their powers. But King does use a stereotype in a negative way in his speech when he states, “Some of you have come fresh from narrow jail cells” (king). This is a stereotype that blacks tend to go to jail.

Next, discrimination and equity are misinterpreted because of a lack of education. A lack of education can be generated for many reasons. A prominent reason is that there was a lack of education on the issues of discrimination and equity for children in their family household. This can be caused by the parent’s rejection that racism exists, or the parents were never taught that racism exists. King support that there is a lack of education in his “Letter from a Birmingham Jail” when he states, “To a degree, academic freedom is a reality today because Socrates practiced civil disobedience” (King p3). He is conveying that the Greek philosopher “Socrates” practed civil disobedience, and that civil disobedience leads to academic freedom. But this is showing a lack of education because Socrates was a excepting, he was a intelligent philosopher. Not many people are educated on the topic today as well.

To wrap up, discrimination and equity are misinterpreted because of repudiation. Repudiation is simply the rejection of an idea. A majority of society is in refusal of acceptance that racism exists in society. Repudiation is formed from previous knowledge, lifestyle, stereotypes, etc. Throughout King’s speech and letter, he claims that whites are rejecting the idea that discrimination and equity exist. One example can be shown when king states in his speech “It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned”. In 1963 king thought it was obvious that discrimination was evidence and that whites were in rejection of acceptance. King continues on in his speech to counteracts white’s want to “wait”, as previously talked about in this paper, for a later time to establish blacks equality by stating “now is the time” several times throughout his speech. King is showing no acceptance to rejection from the whites. He wants action now. This is why repudiation is a problem in society. The majority is society doesn’t want to initiate major change, so they insist on denying that it exists.

On the other side, some may counter what was claimed in this paper. They believe that society does not hold stereotypes towards others, lack of education does not exist, and that rejection of the idea of racism does not exist. If they’re confident that stereotypes do not exist, they think there is no misconception in society. If they believe there is no lack of education, they figure society understands all aspects of racism. If they believe that repudiation doesn’t exist, they think everyone sees that racism exists and tries to do something about it.  In reality, all of these issues are evident in society. The issues have lightened up over the years, but they are still obvious.

In all, discrimination and equity are misinterpreted because of the frequent use of stereotypes, lack of education, and repudiation. Racism as a whole has been around for many years and it is here to stay forever. Given that, at least the intensity of discrimination has decrease over time. Martin Luther king, jr shows racism related to discrimination and equity in two of his well know pieces of work.
