Topic: The Real and present Dangers: White supremacy

Could the alt-right racialization of white nationalism ideologies, religious views, and political agendas be the greatest threat to achieving equality?

The increasing visibility and violence of these white supremacist groups have turned them into symbols of racism and inequalities in the country, and therefore, these groups present a real danger and threat to our ambition of achieving racial understanding and equality if they are not addressed.
Topic Discussion:
In 2016, I watched CNN as the electoral votes came in, thinking that the united states would have their first female present after having their first African American president. But how wrong I was instead of making history, America’s citizens decide to elect a man that would divide the country. Donald Trump did just as he promised to allow hatred, racism and discrimination against people of colour to devour the country and made it acceptable to the white citizen. Acceptance into the mainstream. Especially after Obama’s eight-year presidency was the alt-right demanded to have a white male presentation in the white house. I have watched as people who look like me be the subject of violent attacks from white supremacist groups. Killings committed by people linked with extremist groups have significantly increased, leading to domestic hate from various races (Lowery). There has not been a time in American history where people of colour have not been pursued. However, the moment I realized that the hate turned from online to actual action was on, in 2017, white supremacists, influenced by the propaganda on white-nationalists, came together in Charlottesville to protest the removal of confederate monuments in the park. They attacked some students and counter-protesters, which showed the violent nature of these extreme white supremacy groups. (Cullen). In his book, White bound nationalists, antiracists, and the shared meanings of race, Matthew Hughey notes,
“White identity formation is reproduced by means of where whites live, the jobs they hold, those with whom they interact, and in their ability to wield power” (Hughey, 191).
Most white supremacy groups consist of young adults in their 20s who are targeted through social media. Some groups like AWD and Evropa have spread their ideologies to colleges and universities, impacting these young people’s actions and increasing the number of violent attacks based on race. Not only have the recruitment of different white supremacist groups have become more prominent, but their voices also hold a rally, especially when Donald Trump is involved. He allows and even fuels their ideology of a white hierarchy over other races as more immigrants come into the United States.
In his article Structural Racism and the Will to Act, Tehama Bunyasi addresses the ways society values particular lives more than others, showing the discord in our community (Bunyasi). Many people have lived through harrowing racial experiences, which have affected their perception of society. Elwood Watson says, “For many of us, our viewpoints on race have largely been formed by our personal experiences” (Watson). This illustrates that supremacists’ notions have taken root in our country, and it is vital to address these issues to achieve racial understanding and equality.
